The idea of a summer road trip can often feel like something from your younger, more carefree days before jobs and kids and bills and other adult responsibilities.
But with these three destinations, all within 300 miles, there’s no reason you can’t hit the open road for an impromptu trip.
So, pack the kids, the dog, a few snacks, and head out to these nearby destinations:
- The Niobrara River near Valentine, Nebraska: About 200 miles away from the Black Hills, you’ll find the Niobrara River. Float along this lazy river on a tube, or rent a kayak to tackle some white water.
- The Theodore Roosevelt National Park outside Medora, North Dakota: Located about 240 miles from Rapid City, Theodore Roosevelt National Park features stunning views of the North Dakota Badlands.
The Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming: Conveniently located halfway between Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone, the Big Horns offer an incredibly diverse landscape with reservoirs, campgrounds, and thousands of acres of wilderness to explore.
